What is Hip / SI Joint Pain?

What is Hip / SI Joint Pain?

The hip is the largest joint in the body, and is involved in nearly every movement we make. Because of its high use, its also meant to be quite durable. Whenever you use the hip (for example, by going for a run), a cushion of cartilage helps prevent friction as the hip bone moves in its socket.

Despite its durability, the hip joint isn’t indestructible. With age and use, the cartilage can wear down or become damaged. Muscles and tendons in the hip can get overused. The hip bone itself can be fractured during a fall or other injury. Any of these conditions can lead to hip pain.

What are the Causes of Hip / SI Joint Pain?

Hip pain may be caused by arthritis, injuries or other problems. Herniated disks and other back problems can often lead to pain in the hip area as well. As the hip is crucial in so many of our daily activities, it’s also the target of many problems and injuries and potential causes of hip pain are numerous. A doctor will be able to make an assessment of your symptoms and recommend a treatment plan depending on your needs.

The more common causes of Hip/ SI Joint pain are:

  • Arthritis
  • Injuries
  • Bursitis
  • Dislocation
  • Hip fracture
  • Sprains and strains
  • Tendinitis
  • Pinched nerves
  • Herniated disk
  • Sciatica

Depending on the condition that’s causing your hip pain, you might feel the discomfort in your:

  • Thigh
  • Inside of the hip joint
  • Groin
  • Outside of the hip joint
  • Buttocks

You might notice that your pain gets worse with activity, especially if it’s caused by arthritis. Along with the pain, you might have reduced range of motion. Some people develop a limp from persistent hip pain.
