Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Why Get Tested?
Many STDs do not show symptoms, so you might not know you’re infected. However, these infections can lead to serious health issues if left untreated.

Who Should Be Tested?

  • Everyone aged 13 to 64 should get tested for HIV at least once.
  • All sexually active women under 25 should be tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia every year.
  • Women 25 and older with risk factors should be tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia annually. Risk factors include new or multiple partners, or a partner with an STD.
  • Pregnant people should be tested for syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C early in pregnancy. Additional testing may be necessary throughout pregnancy.
  • Pregnant individuals at risk should also get tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia early in pregnancy, with repeat testing as needed.
  • Sexually active men who are gay or bisexual and men who have sex with men should get tested:
    • For syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea at least once a year. Those with multiple or anonymous partners may need more frequent testing (every 3 to 6 months).
    • For HIV at least once a year, with more frequent testing (e.g., every 3 to 6 months) if needed.
    • For hepatitis C at least once a year if living with HIV.
  • Anyone who shares injection drug equipment should get tested for HIV at least once a year.
  • People who have had oral or anal sex should consult their healthcare provider about testing for throat and rectal STIs.
